We study chemistry in the solid state and are aiming to understand chemical reactions that are happening during milling.

Our strength is the in situ monitoring by powder X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopy which enable us to extract reaction profiles, identify and isolate intermediates, and study the influence of additives or temperature on milling reactivity. We now also use isotope labelled solids to track migrations of atoms and molecules in a milled sample.

Our global goal is a solvent-free and sustainable chemical and pharmaceutical industry. To achieve this goal, we study the basic principles of the mechanochemical milling environment and mechanisms. We are developing and tweaking our own tools for this: from new experimental setups to data collection and data analysis.

We are involved in the COST Action CA18112 “Mechanochemistry for sustainable Industry” where Ivan is the leader of the work package dedicated to in situ monitoring.
